 Local Atheist Groups

The East Bay Atheists meet each month in the Berkeley Main Library (2090 Kittredge Street, 3rd floor meeting room) to discuss atheism and other topical events of interests to atheists. The collective mission of EBA includes local activism when "freethinkers" rights to be free from religion are threatened, or when government promotes religion. The Atheists of Silicon Valley meet the second and fourth Wednesday evening of the month with a social meeting then a more organized regular meeting in a townhouse complex.  Web: www.godlessgeeks.com.

Atheists and Freethinkers of Contra Costa County meets the 4th Tuesday of each month at the Lafayette Community Center, 500 St. Mary's Road, Lafayette CA.  Join in for learning, social interaction, and reaching out into the community with several exciting public projects.  Contact: Chuck Cannon, 925-672-7243.

The Gay and Lesbian Atheists and Humanists meet at 11:00 AM on the last Saturday of each month at the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center at 1800 Market Street.  Contact: Dick Hewetson, 415-824-5445.

Meeting the second Sunday of every month at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, the Devout Atheists discuss a wide range of freethought topics.   Contact: Ray Westergard, 510-653-9220.

Bringing believers and nonbelievers together for moderated conversations, The Garrison-Martineau Project promotes dialogue and understanding -- helping people to be heard, lowering the anger and anxiety of the "culture war" as a means of improving civic discourse.

 National Resources

Born out of the landmark Murray v. Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a religious liberty watchdog group based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1947, the organization educates Americans about the importance of church-state separation in safeguarding religious freedom.

The "Internet Infidels" maintain the Secular Web, a large and diverse online community of nonbelievers.

Spend some time at Positive Atheism for plenty of freewheeling commentary and discussion.

Streaming Atheist radio is offered by the Atheist Network.  Put your computer speakers to work!

Dr. Michael Newdow's Restore the Pledge website comprehensively covers the "Under God" issue.

Faith Freedom International exposes the "lies of  Islam and its expansionist plans."

The Brights are a fast-growing worldwide movement advocating the concept of an umbrella constituency uniting the great diversity of individuals with a naturalistic worldview (free of supernatural and mystical forces).

The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers is an Internet-based grassroots organization that exists to provide a forum for service members to express their views and find a community of like-minded individuals.

Kimberly Blaker's The Wall is a weekly syndicated column on church and state and other issues from a liberal perspective.  She is editor and coauthor of  The Fundamentals of Extremism: the Christian Right in America.

In an effort to create greater awareness of the dangers we now face and an understanding of the dynamics of fundamentalism, the authors of The Fundamentals of Extremism: the Christian Right in America have decided at this time of crisis to make the book available to read online--free. Written by Molleen Matsumura, "Sweet Reason" appears monthly in the Humanist Network News. The Sweet Reason website includes an archive of past columns and a resource list.

Seattle Atheists is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the atheist community in the Seattle area, striving to promote understanding and respect toward all freethinkers by providing information, creating a sense of fellowship, actively opposing discrimination, and above all, emphasizing reason and critical thinking over supernaturalism.

Advocating the secular viewpoint, the Iowa Secularists strive to create a community of people in Iowa with a religion-free worldview.


 Religion-Specific

The grassroots site of Watchers of the Watch Tower World of Jehovah's Witnesses is devoted to ex-JWs and their pursuits.

The www.jehovahs-witness.com site owner started out a believer, then got dis-fellowshipped for having made the site. Now it's an interactive message board for free exchange of info for ex-JWs.

A former San Francisco Scientologist maintains that the lies of Scientology hurt Scientologists and hurt non-Scientologists as well.


 Science Resources

Defending the Teaching of Evolution in the Public Schools, the National Center for Science Education is a nationally-recognized clearinghouse for information based in Oakland, California.  Telephone: 510-601-7203.

The "Amazing Randi's" James Randi Educational Foundation is an educational resource on the paranormal, pseudoscientific and the supernatural.

CSICOP, the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, encourages the critical investigation of paranormal and fringe-science claims from a responsible, scientific point of view and disseminates factual information about the results of such inquiries to the scientific community and the public.

The Space Telescope Science Institute’s Hubblesite has breaking space news and gorgeous pictures of our universe through the lens of NASA's orbiting Hubble Space Telescope.
